A Case of Anomalous Horizontal Fissure and Hypoplastic Middle Lobe of the Right Lung International Journal of Morphology
Okamoto,Keishi; Wakebe,Tetsuaki; Saiki,Kazunobu; Manabe,Yoshitaka; Tsurumoto,Toshiyuki.
During dissection practice for medical students at Nagasaki University, a horizontal fissure and hypoplastic middle lobe were encountered in the right lung of an 81-year-old Japanese female. In a normal right lung, the horizontal fissure is situated anterior to the oblique fissure. On the contrary, in the present case, the horizontal fissure was situated posterior to the oblique fissure. We identified a small, additional lobe on the medial surface of this lung. It was situated in the medial part of the oblique fissure, and was determined to be a small hypoplastic middle lobe. As a result of the hypoplasia of the middle lobe, the original horizontal fissure may have disappeared from the anterior surface. The horizontal fissure, in this case, may be a...

Lead is one of the heavy metals most used in industry. Poisoning due to long-term lead exposure is known as saturnism, and is an occupational illness that has been known for many years. Lead is highly toxic and can compromise the structural and functional patterns of organs and systems. The aim of this study was to examine the lungs and kidneys of fetuses from female Wistar rats exposed to lead acetate. In this study, the lungs and kidneys of 20 fetuses from female rats that had previously been treated with lead acetate were dissected, fixed, embedded in paraffin and stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Macroscopic changes to the shape, color and consistency of organs from fetuses treated with this heavy metal were observed, in comparison with organs from...

Anomalous Lobar Pattern of Right Lung: A Case Report International Journal of Morphology
Modgil,Vishal; Das,Srijit; Suri,Rajesh.
The right lung classically has two fissures, an oblique and a horizontal, dividing it into three lobes namely the superior, middle and lower. The anomaly of the lobar pattern has been described by many research workers on CT scans, where as, there are fewer studies on gross anatomical specimens. In the present case , which was incidentally detected, we report three fissures dividing the right lung into four lobes. Such abnormal fissures and lobes are clinically important for identifying broncho-pulmonary segments. Anatomical knowledge of anomalies of fissures and lobes of lungs may be important for surgeons performing lobectomies, radiologists interpreting X ray and CT scans and also of academic interest to all medical personnel

Comparative Quantitative and Qualitative Attributes of the Surface Respiratory Macrophages in the Domestic Duck and the Rabbit International Journal of Morphology
Mutua,P. M; Gicheru,M. M; Makanya,A. N; Kiama,S. G.
In mammals, surface respiratory macrophages (SM) are known to play a foremost role in protecting the respiratory system by providing first line of defense through engulfing pathogens and particulate matter respired with air. It has been reported that the pulmonary cellular defense system of domestic birds is inadequate. In particular, low number of SM and even lack of the cells in a healthy avian respiratory system have been associated with susceptibility of domestic birds to respiratory diseases. In an endeavor to resolve the existing controversy, the quantitative and qualitative attributes of the surface respiratory macrophages of the domestic duck and of the domestic rabbit were compared under similar experimental conditions. Quantitatively, the rabbit...

Comparative study between radiology and ultrasound in the evaluation of extracardiac thoracic diseases in dogs and cats Ciência Rural
Pires,Sâmara Turbay; Hage,Maria Cristina Ferrarini Nunes Soares; Pinto,Ana Carolina Brandão de Campos Fonseca; Hagen,Stefano Carlo Filippo.
ABSTRACT: This study compared radiographic and B-mode and Doppler ultrasound exams of the thoracic cavity, excluding the heart, in canine and feline species, in which the radiographs revealed the formation of a potential acoustic window. The objectives were to demonstrate the advantages and limitations of each technique and to determine whether the additional information influenced the differential diagnosis as well as the outcome of each case. The advantages of B-mode ultrasonography included: better qualitative and quantitative evaluation of pleural effusions, an improved ability to determine whether a nodule was solid or cystic and easier determination of the location in the pulmonary parenchyma. The Power Doppler ultrasound evaluated the blood supply...

Departures from the physical optimality in the bronchial tree of rats (Rattus norvegicus) Biol. Res.
CANALS M,MAURICIO; ATALA,CRISTIAN; OLIVARES,RICARDO; NOVOA,FRANCISCO F; ROSENMANN,MARIO.
We studied the departure from the physical optimality of the bronchial tree of rats using both i) the minimum volume and power and ii) the minimum surface and drag criteria, considering the bronchial junction as the unit study based on Zamir's model for vascular trees. Our results show deviations of the junctions of the bronchial tree from the expected optimums in the proximal airway that can be explained by both, the turbulent or transitional flow regime, and the airway's necessity to distribute its terminal branches in the alveolar surface filling the thoracic volume. The departures of the observed values at the optimum for the minimum volume and power were significantly different than the obtained departure values for the minimum surface and drag...

Detection of immunoglobulin G in the lung and liver of hamsters with visceral leishmaniasis BJMBR
Mathias,R.; Costa,F.A.L.; Goto,H..
Several organs are affected in visceral leishmaniasis, not only those rich in mononuclear phagocytes. Hypergammaglobulinemia occurs during visceral leishmaniasis; anti-Leishmania antibodies are not primarily important for protection but might be involved in the pathogenesis of tissue lesions. The glomerulonephritis occurring in visceral leishmaniasis has been attributed to immune complex deposition but in other organs the mechanism has not been studied. In the current study we demonstrated the presence of IgG in the lung and liver of hamsters with visceral leishmaniasis. Hamsters were injected intraperitoneally with 2 x 10(7) amastigotes of Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi and the presence of IgG in the liver and lung was evaluated at 7, 15, 30, 45, 80 and...

Souza-Moraes,M.R.; David-Filho,R.; Baptista-Silva,J.C.C.; Ullian,M.; Franco,M.F.; Gabriel Jr.,A.; Smith,B.; Burihan,E..
We investigated kidney and lung alterations caused by intercellular adhesion molecule type 1 (ICAM-1) blockade after ischemia and reperfusion of hind limb skeletal muscles. Rats were submitted to ligature of the infrarenal aorta for 6 h. The animals were randomized into three groups of 6 rats each: group I, sacrificed after ischemia; group II, reperfusion for 24 h, and group III, reperfusion for 24 h after receiving monoclonal anti-ICAM-1 antibodies. At the end of the experiment, blood samples were collected for creatinine, lactate dehydrogenase, creatine phosphokinase, potassium, pH and leukocyte counts. Samples were taken from the muscles of the hind limbs and from the kidneys and lungs for histological analysis and measurement of the neutrophil...

Effects of environmental temperature on oxygen diffusion capacity during post-natal development in the altricial rodent, Phyllotis darwini RChHN
CANALS,MAURICIO; FIGUEROA,DANIELA P; MIRANDA,JESSICA P; SABAT,PABLO.
In this contribution we studied the developmental phenotypic plasticity of respiratory structures involved in the exchange of gases in an altricial rodent, the leaf-eared mouse {Phyllotis darwini). We studied morphological pulmonary parameters of warm (30 °C) and cold acclimated animals 15 °C) at different developmental stages. We found that acclimation treatments did not affect neither lung volume, the alveolo-capillary barrier thickness nor the respiratory surface density. In consequence the oxygen diffusion capacity was not affected. Although Phyllotis darwini exhibited structural respiratory changes expected by its ontogenetic development, these structures were not affected by thermal acclimation during the post-natal development.

Hemangiopericytoma in a female dog with direct invasion of abdominal cavity and pulmonary metastasis Ciência Rural
Silva,Elisângela Olegário da; Romero,Fernanda; Green,Kerriel Thandile; Martins,Maria Isabel Mello; Bracarense,Ana Paula Frederico Rodrigues Loureiro.
An intact adult female Poodle dog was presented with a history of an increase in volume in the left and right mammary inguinal glands. The histopathological examination revealed a proliferation of spindle cells arranged in bundles with concentric arrangements surrounding blood vessels, occasionally collapsed. Three weeks after the surgery, the animal presented a recurrence of the tumor that extended from the left inguinal mammary gland to the vulva. Necropsy revealed direct invasion of the abdominal cavity by the tumor and pulmonary metastasis. The definitive diagnosis of hemangiopericytoma was made by histopathological and immunohistochemical examination. Pulmonary metastasis of CHP (canine hemangiopericytoma) is rare and there is no previous report of...

Histology of the trachea and lung of Siphonops annulatus (Amphibia, Gymnophiona) BJB
KUEHNE,B.; JUNQUEIRA,L. C. U..
The structure of the trachea and lung of Siphonops annulatus was studied in ten specimens of routinely fed animals. The trachea is constituted mainly by incomplete cartilage rings lined by a respiratory epithelium (ciliated and mucous cells) with variable morphology according to the region observed. A rich vascularization of this organ suggests its participation in blood-air gas exchange. The right lung in this species is developed and the left one is atrophied. This organ is constituted mainly by longitudinal septa formed by connective tissue, smooth muscle cells and blood capillaries. These structures are covered by pneumocytes of one type only, which present cytoplasmic particles that have been related with surfactant activity described in the lung of...

Homeostatic and toxic mechanisms regulating manganese uptake, retention, and elimination Biol. Res.
ROTH,JEROME A.
This review attempts to summarize and clarify our basic knowledge as to the various factors that potentially influence the risks imposed from chronic exposure to high atmospheric levels of manganese (Mn). The studies describe the interrelationship of the different systems in the body that regulate Mn homeostasis by characterizing specific, biological components involved in its systemic and cellular uptake and its elimination from the body. A syndrome known as manganism occurs when individuals are exposed chronically to high levels of Mn, consisting of reduced response speed, intellectual deficits, mood changes, and compulsive behaviors in the initial stages of the disorder to more prominent and irreversible extrapyramidal dysfunction resembling Parkinson's...

Morphologic and biochemical changes in male rat lung after surgical and pharmacological castration BJMBR
Ojeda,M.S.; Gómez,N.N.; Gil,E.; Scardapane,L.; Gimenez,M.S..
The morphology of the rat lung was studied by light microscopy in different situations: after surgical and pharmacological castration and after administration of testosterone to the castrated rat to determine if the androgen is required to maintain the normal morphology of the lung. We also determined the effect of flutamide on the phospholipid composition of both the surfactant and microsomes of the lung. Rats were separated into five groups: I - control non-castrated rats, II - castrated rats sacrificed 21 days after castration, III - castrated rats that received testosterone daily from day 2 to day 21 after castration, IV - castrated rats that received testosterone from day 15 to day 21 after castration, and V - control rats injected with flutamide for...

mRNA expression profile of selected oxygen sensing genes in the lung during recovery from chronic hypoxia Biol. Res.
Panariti,Alice; Miserocchi,Giuseppe; Rivolta,Ilaria.
This study analyzed the time dependence decay of the mRNA of selected genes important for the hypoxia response. The genes chosen were the two isoforms of hypoxia-inducible factors, the three isoforms of the prolyl hydroxylase domain protein, the vascular endothelial growth factor and endothelial nitric oxide synthase. mRNA and proteins were extracted from lungs obtained from control, hypoxic and 15 minutes normoxic recovered rats and analyzed by Real-time RT-PCR or by the Western Blot technique. Results indicated that in normoxia isoform 2á was the more represented hypoxia-inducible factor mRNA, and among the prolyl hydroxylase domain transcripts, isoform 3 was the least abundant. Moreover, in chronic hypoxia only hypoxia-inducible factor 1α and...

New therapy of pleural empyema by deoxyribonuclease BJID
Kacprzak,Grzegorz; Majewski,Andrzej; Kolodziej,Jerzy; Rzechonek,Adam; Gürlich,Robert; Bobek,Vladimir.
Empyema is a severe complication of different diseases and traumas. Management of this complication is difficult and should comprise general and local procedures. The general procedure is mainly based on administering wide-spectrum antibiotics. Local management depends on patient general condition, but in all cases the essential procedure is to insert a drain into the pleural cavity and to evacuate the pus. Sometimes pus is very thick and its evacuation and following re-expansion of the lung is rather impossible. In these patients surgical intervention is needed. The use of intrapleural enzymes to support the drainage was first described in 1949 by Tillett and Sherry using a mixture of streptokinase and streptococcal deoxyribonuclease. Nowadays, purified...

Role of matrix metalloproteinases in the development of airway inflammation and remodeling BJMBR
Lagente,V.; Manoury,B.; Nénan,S.; Le Quément,C.; Martin-Chouly,C.; Boichot,E..
Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a major group of proteases known to regulate extracellular matrix (ECM) turnover and so they have been suggested to be important in the process of lung disease associated with tissue remodeling. This has led to the concept that modulation of airway remodeling including excessive proteolysis damage to the tissue may be of interest for future treatment. Within the MMP family, macrophage elastase (MMP-12) is able to degrade ECM components such as elastin and is involved in tissue remodeling processes in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease including emphysema. Pulmonary fibrosis has an aggressive course and is usually fatal within an average of 3 to 6 years after the onset of symptoms. Pulmonary fibrosis is associated...

The left lung is preferentially targeted during experimental paracoccidioidomycosis in C57BL/6 mice BJMBR
Tristão,F.S.M.; Rocha,F.A.; Dias,F.C.; Rossi,M.A.; Silva,J.S..
Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is a chronic systemic mycosis caused by the inhalation of the thermally dimorphic fungus Paracoccidioides brasiliensis as well as the recently described P. lutzii. Because the primary infection occurs in the lungs, we investigated the differential involvement of the right and left lungs in experimental P. brasiliensis infection. Lungs were collected from C57BL/6 mice at 70 days after intravenous infection with 1×106 yeast cells of a virulent strain of P. brasiliensis (Pb18). The left lung, which in mice is smaller and has fewer lobes than the right lung, yielded increased fungal recovery associated with a predominant interleukin-4 response and diminished synthesis of interferon-γ and nitric oxide compared with the right lung....
